In 2004 one of my best friends from High School was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 8th month of pregnancy. She was 33. She had her baby induced early and successfully endured chemotherapy. One month later she walked 60 miles in the Arizona sun. I thought… if she can do it… I have to do it!
I knew all to well the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer as it killed my mom, Mary Jo, in 1993 when I was just 21.
I had to do something to take back the feeling of powerlessness that breast cancer had instilled in me. Hence, Boobs on the Move was unofficially born in 2005, when my friend Vanessa and I decided that 60 miles didn’t sound so bad! And not only was it not so bad, it was amazing, inspiring and life-changing. I was so moved by the stories I heard, the feeling of community, and the people I met, that I needed to do it again and AGAIN!
In 2006 Boobs on the Move grew to six walkers and we began getting creative! Our fundraising efforts reached out to the community with our Annual Garage Sale and wildly popular OktoberBreast! The walk was a blast and our spirits continued to soar.
Now in 2007 we are 11 strong and growing! We have events planned all over the place and supporters galore! It seems as if Boobs on the Move has taken on a life of its own. Our families, friends, neighbors and communities continue to amaze me each year with their outpouring of ideas, services and willingness to give. It seems as if everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way.
So if what we’re doing can help save one mother, sister, daughter, husband, friend… then 60 miles isn’t so bad.
Boobs on the Move walks on to help Fund a Cure!
